Read to me!

On Wisconsin! The Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education (WAHCE) is building a love of reading in young children from limited income families through a unique program called Wisconsin Bookworms.

Wisconsin Bookworms is a partnership between WAHCE, Cooperative Extension Family Living Programs and Wisconsin Public Television. The program provides free books to low-income children and engages their families in literacy activities.

While local groups raise funds to cover the cost of books for the Bookworms programs in their counties, volunteer readers donate thousands of hours of personal time to read to children. These volunteers are supported by staff from Wisconsin Public Television and Family Living Programs who provide training to the readers about childhood development, the best ways to read to children and awareness of other cultures.

Literacy is “omnipresent” in the Parents as Teachers approach, according to a University of Idaho study of its curriculum. Literacy lays the foundation for school–indeed life–success.
